My Approach

Psychotherapy room in Mind Space counselling and psychotherapy centre, on the Lisbrun Road, in Belfast.

Psychotherapy (often abbreviated to 'Therapy') is one form of mental health treatment based on the power of speaking about the difficulties in your life in order to lessen the burden of them. It's similar to counselling - which many people are more aware of - but psychotherapists are trained to a higher level to deal with more complex situations. It focuses on gaining greater insight, clarity and relief from speaking about our lives in detail with a higly trained professional. Just having space to think and speak away from the pressure of our daily lives can be a powerful catalyst for healing and change.

Psychotherapy is about having space and time where you can speak without being judged. It frees up your energy when you have somewhere to go on a regular basis to unburden your mind. It's open to everyone, no matter how mild or severe you think your situation is - just wanting to begin is the only starting place. Many people don't fully know what they want from therapy before begin, they just know that they feel a need to seek help and make a start. So it’s important to not put yourself under pressure to ‘have it all worked out’ in advance - that's exactly the insight and clarity that you can gain from the process.

My specific approach is Psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and it’s also called Psychoanalysis. It looks deeply into the underlying causes of our difficulties to help us understand our experiences, especially when we feel confused by our own actions and thoughts. Everything in our lives is connected, and psychoanalysis is about appreciating the interconnections within our lives to gain greater perspective on what we're going through. This approach is particularly useful if you find yourself stuck in repetitive cycles and confused by your own behaviour. It’s also especially well suited to the processing of trauma, both past and present, to create enduring transformation in your life, empowering you to live more fully and freely.
